Multimedia Journalism

The Hawkview is a print and online news student-run publication serving La Quinta High students, staff, and the larger community. Students will learn the basics of digital storytelling, reporting, writing, photo, video, audio, social media, and learn the principles of ethical journalism.

The first goal is to equip students with skills that are highly sought in the journalism industry. The second goal is to provide students the knowledge to understand the media ecosystem, and to think critically about how these tools reshape the industry and reflect on their implications on society and democracy.

As students continue in the multimedia journalism pathway throughout their high school career, they have opportunities to plan, design, and produce the school newspaper, website, and community-based projects, in a student-led program, which enables them to practice real-world deadline skills in a collaborative learning environment in which their multimedia stories are published for an audience.

Students gain an appreciation for accuracy, fairness, and accountability. They practice courage, initiative, resourcefulness, integrity, cooperation, competitive spirit, and loyalty. The Hawkview staff becomes very close in the course of a year, and many students say they feel that they have made friends for life while working on the publication.
